Deborah Rea reports that on the evening of Leap Day 2016 the only proposal being considered by the members of the Stationers’ Inter-Livery Swimathon team was leaping into the pool at the RAC Club in Epsom and covering 5k in the 2.5 hours allowed.
Somewhat daunted by the reduction of the team from six to four by ill-health we decided to change from our usual strategy of each covering our allotted number of lengths in one go to each undertaking short sharp bursts and resting before tackling another short sharp burst. Simon Elliot, Colin Wells and Peter Allen (from left to right) each swam 10 lengths and I swam six on each round and to our surprise and delight we finished the 5k (170 lengths!) in just under two hours.

The event is held to raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s appeal and we are allowed to split what we raise between that and a charity of our own choosing. Naturally we are supporting the Stationers’ Foundation. Many members have sponsored us generously but we are a long way short of our target which is to try to beat what we raised in 2012 when we gave £1200 each to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the Foundation. If our 913 members each gave £3 we'd be able to give nearly £1340 to each charity. If you would like to give please email Deborah Rea as soon as possible and she will explain how it can be done.
