There is a goodly proportion of the members of the Company which enthusiastically follows the game of Rugby Union. Only last week we heard of one member who already has his tickets for the World Cup in Japan and there are regular conversations in the office with avid followers of Harlequins (one of whom follows from the US!) and Wasps.
No doubt there are other allegiances too but not many of these devotees will be aware that Liveryman Ivan Gunn (pictured above) at one time served on the Devon RU Referees Committee. Whilst serving on that he mentored a young woman called Sara Cox, and kept her going when times were tough. Yesterday, Sunday, 4 November, Sara became the first woman to referee a Premiership Rugby match when she took charge of Wasps v Northampton. Past Master Tom Hempenstall, who supports Wasps, sadly didn't see the match but has seen Sara in action at Worthing and is very complimentary about her refereeing skills. Ivan is very proud!
