It is with much regret that we report the deaths of the following members, and staff, of the Company:
Brian Pocknall - Registrar on 22 October 2017 aged 59.
After a childhood in Kent, Brian joined the finance department of BT at its head office in Newgate Street at the age of 18. In the 19 years that he was there, he was responsible for management accounts for the head office support units, covering around 8,000 people and a turnover of some £400 million. Thereafter he spent six years as the Group Accountant for an equipment hire firm, four years at an agency of the Department of Health and two years at an aeroplane leasing company.
Brian joined the Company on 1 December 2011, in the role of Registrar, taking over from Bert Abel. He brought a new level of financial experience and expertise to the accounts function at the Stationers’ Company, improving our use of computer technology in managing the ledgers, moving to online banking and automating quarterage invoicing through the membership database. However, Brian brought so much more to the role by helping at events, attending events, taking on responsibility for HR management and acting as Secretary of the Investment Review Committee. He was always friendly and supremely generous with his time, both for members of the Company and colleagues in the Office.
Brian was a great cricket enthusiast and a loyal supporter of Surrey. He loved nothing more than to have a ticket booked for a day at Lords; unless, of course, it was a ticket for a match at his beloved Oval. He also visited county and club grounds in Kent and Surrey on annual get-togethers with his many cricketing friends.
Brian leaves a son, Robert, who has his own photography and film business and has frequently taken photos at Company events, and daughter, Charlotte, who has just started on a creative writing degree course in Winchester.
Brian’s sudden death has left the Company, office staff and members alike, with a deep sense of shock and loss. He was a wise counsellor, calm in a crisis, deeply caring about his colleagues and a good friend to us all. We are going to miss him terribly. However, our sense of loss is nothing when compared to that of his family and we will be holding them in our hearts and minds over the coming months.
