We are delighted to announce that this year’s speaker for the Charter Dinner will be writer, broadcaster and former MP, Gyles Brandreth.
A former Oxford Scholar, President of the Oxford Union and MP for the City of Chester, Gyles Brandreth’s career has ranged from being a Whip and Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in John Major’s government to starring in his own award-winning musical revue in London’s West End. A prolific broadcaster (in programmes ranging Wordaholics to QI and Have I Got News for You), a reporter on The One Show, a regular on Just a Minute and an acclaimed interviewer (principally for the Sunday Telegraph). He is also a novelist, children’s author and biographer, Gyles has published two volumes of diaries and two acclaimed royal biographies. His recent Sunday Times best-sellers include Word Play, a celebration of the English language, and The 7 Secrets of Happiness – No 1 on Amazon. As a performer, Gyles Brandreth has been seen in the West End in Zipp! One hundred musicals for less than the price of one at the Duchess Theatre and on tour throughout the UK, and as Malvolio and the Sea Captain in Twelfth Night: The Musical at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Gyles Brandreth has been London correspondent for “Up to the Minute” on CBS News and his books published in the USA include the New York Times best-seller, The Joy of Lex, as well as The Oscar Wilde Murder Mysteries (Simon & Schuster).
The Charter Dinner will be held on Wednesday, 2 May 2018, to celebrate the granting of the Company’s Royal Charter by Queen Mary Tudor on 4 May 1557. Official Company guests are invited to this dinner, who include the CEOs of our Corporate Members, Presidents/Chairmen of affiliated Trade Associations, with their Chief Executives, and senior executives from our main suppliers.
Liverymen may invite guests, and this year spouses/partners are welcome, but may be sat opposite each other, not adjacent (unless otherwise specified).
Liverymen are asked to remind their guests that those dining should not leave the table until the Master and principal guests have departed, and certainly not before the Loyal Toast. Badges should not be worn by private guests.
Tickets are £98 inc VAT per head. To book your tickets please return the slip below, with the name(s) of your guests plus any seating or dietary requirements you (or they) may have, together with your cheque.
