NORTHERN STATIONERS YORK VISIT - 1 NOVEMBER 2024

Northern Stationers York Visit - 1 November 2024

One of the highlights of the Northern Stationers’ visit to York Minster Palace was a private viewing of the so-called Wicked Bible printed in1631 by the former Master Stationer Robert Barker.

It is notorious because of a printing error – in the Seventh Commandment the word “not” was left out, making the Bible read: “Thou shalt commit adultery.” Stationers also saw the Pica, a guide for priests dating from 1510, the first book to be printed in York.

The Minster, built in 1230AD by Archbishop Walter Gray as a private chapel for his York Palace, is the largest cathedral library in the country, with a collection of more than 120,000 volumes of Early English printed books and manuscripts.
