Debates are held by the London Press Club in association with the Stationers’ Company each February and last night saw the latest in a series which up to now has focused on equal opportunity and pay for women journalists, and the battle for survival of freedom of the press. Last night's topic was Rediscovering the Lost Generation.
Chaired by Samantha Simmonds (a BBC journalist and news presenter and third from left in the photo below) ) an impressive panel of Vicky Frost (Editor of Future London ), Nic Newman (Reuters Institute Director ), Yara Silver (Group Head of Social Media for Reach plc's national titles, Daily Mirror, Daily Star, Daily Express and OK! Magazine), Paul Clarkson (Group Managing Editor of the Sun), and Abbianca Makoni (an Editorial Apprentice with the Press Association and the Evening Standard/Independent) tackled how to re-engage with Generation Z given recent research conducted by the
Reuters Institute which identified that those under the age of 35 spent just two minutes a day looking at current affairs, compared to 22 minutes every week for over 35s.
Another of the Evening Standard apprentices, Ted Hennessy, attended and covered the event in an article which appeared in the Evening Standard online (click to read) and we hope to have greater coverage in Stationers' News in due course but the panel felt that older people felt that to be 'au courant' with the news was a sort of duty while younger people found it a chore and they just wanted quick easy access so were inclined not to serach out a "news room" but to hit Snapchat and Instagram!
