As has so often been the case over the past year the Trade Association Winter event had to temporarily set aside its tried and tested traditional way of proceeding and take up Zoom technology.
While this was not, therefore, the usual collation of focused discussion, networking and lunch it was nevertheless a hugely informative catch up and included a major contribution from Brian O’Leary, Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group, who gave an overview of the new President, Covid-19 and the Book Industry in the US. Charles Jarrold, Chief Executive, of the BPIF spoke about how the last year with the consequences of Covid-19 and Brexit had affected the UK Printing industry. He spoke of the huge 40% drop in business last March. Things had improved somewhat but business was still 10-15% down. As an organisation the BPIF, especially its Health and Safety and HR services is very busy.
Bettine Pellant, Chief Executive Officer of PICON spoke about how its members had also had a tough time. She felt that Q1 and Q2 didn’t look great but there was hope for Q3 once restrictions were lifted. Interestingly all three speakers. found there was positive hope for the future. Attendees were also given a short Vision 350 update by Giles Fagan the Clerk Designate and briefed on the Stationers’ Innovation Excellence Awards by Court Assistant Jill Jones.
