The Trust was set up by Robert Barker, a famous past master, printer of the original King James Bible, and resident of Datchet.
Originally the aim of the Trust was to provide and maintain a bridge across the pond in the middle of village. After the last of the original trustees died in the 1600s it was discovered that he had in his possessions over £128 in a bag marked "Datchet Bagg". A Court of Law set up a more effective system for appointing trustees. From that time on the Trust's minutes exist in an almost unbroken sequence providing an invaluable historical record.
The main asset of the trust was, and still is, the Royal Stag public house in the centre of the village. The trust now provides support for many local organisations in Datchet including the Baptist Church where Freeman John Livingston is a Deacon and lay preacher.
“The work of the Trust is vital in supporting so many good causes that are the bedrock of the local community”, said John “The Scouts, WI, Football & Cricket Clubs, schools local hospice and Datchet Players have all benefited in recent years. Having worked in the Office Supplies sector continuously since 1980 I am delighted to provide a link back to past master Robert Barker”.
