Not only have these women, children and men escaped war, dispossession and persecution in Sudan, Syria, Iran and elsewhere, but refugees are regularly subject to evictions and destruction of property by the French police. Many haven’t been able to wash in weeks; all of them are hungry and cold.
“Volunteers with Calais Light spend the weekend working with local partner charities,” James explains. “I’ll be in Dunkirk with Roots, an organisation which focuses on eco-responsible water and power provision. We all pay our own way so donations go directly towards helping those in desperate need.”
Donations can be made here – £30 buys a 3-person tent, or £100 a 1,000-litre water reservoir. Please select Gift Aid and mention James in your comment. He, and the refugees, would be most grateful.
