The Stationers’ Company is steeped in history, but, as the Innovation Excellence Awards demonstrate, our eyes are always on the future. This is one of the most active Livery Companies in the City of London, with around 90 percent of our 1,000 members working in or connected to the UK’s communications and content industries. These include trade & academic publishing, newspaper & magazine publishing, journalism, printing, packaging, paper making, stationery, greeting cards, office products, and related intellectual property, archival and digital businesses.

Hello reader!

I know what you are thinking: we are barely a few weeks into 2025 and The Stationer is already banging on about artificial intelligence — and quite right too, as a startling new report in The Daily Telegraph warns about the impact of the technology on jobs.

By analysing figures from the Office for National Statistics, the newspaper was able to reveal which sectors and salaries are growing fastest. But it also paints a morbid picture of the areas that are on decline amid the Government’s economic policies, changing consumer preferences and (you guessed it) the advent of AI.

Stationers’ Company appointed as Custodian of the Paper Gold Medal

31 JANUARY 2025

After nearly 60 years of awarding annually the prestigious Paper Gold Medal to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the print, paper and allied industries, the Paper Industry Gold Medal Association has passed the custodianship of the Gold Medal to the Stationers’ Company, the livery company for the communication and content industries, who will now be the residual body for The Gold Medal; ensuring the safekeeping and oversight of the Gold Medal for future generations.

Once a relatively sparsely populated and rustic area despite its proximity to London, present-day Surrey is prime commuter-belt territory. Even so, the county has not lost its rural charm. As well as boasting many Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is England’s most wooded county. Moreover, Surrey has a long connection with cycling. When the riding craze first hit Britain in the 1800s, the Surrey town of Ripley was quickly dubbed the ‘Mecca of all good cyclists’. Surrey roads made up much of the annual RideLondon event, itself an extension of the 2012 Olympic road-cycling route.
